Scenario: Smoke or fire

Response to smoke or fire is dependent upon the alertness of staff, faculty and students. If you should notice smoke or fire, take the following precautions:

NOTIFICATION: Pull a fire alarm station to activate the fire alarm system.

EXPECTED RESPONSE: Smoke or fire
Immediately evacuate the building. Help those individuals with special needs and watch out for each other. Close doors as you leave to protect your path from the spread of smoke and fire. If your escape route is filled with smoke, crawl or stay low to the floor to avoid smoke inhalation. If someone's clothes catch on fire, make sure they "stop, drop, and roll." Tackle them if necessary—running only fans the flames.
