Winter Weather

Winter weather can occur suddenly and can disrupt normal campus operations. Be prepared and follow university communications for updates.

During Extreme Cold:

  • Make sure you can receive university updates and alerts. Follow developments and be prepared to take appropriate action if conditions worsen.
  • Bring pets and sensitive plants indoors.
  • Prepare an emergency kit. A flashlight, first aid kit, extra clothes, and a power bank are important items to consider including.
  • Stock up on some extra food items and plenty of water. Bully's Pantry is also available: https://www.students.msstate.edu/resources/msu-food-security-network
  • Charge electronic devices in advance and have multiple ways to receive weather updates.
  • If you own or rent a house, wrap/cover exposed pipes to prevent freezing.
  • Avoid going out during freezing conditions. There may be slick spots on roadways and sidewalks.
  • If you must go outside, limit your time outdoors, wear layers, and stay dry.
  • Avoid parking under trees or eaves, as limbs may break and snow/ice can accumulate and fall.
  • Avoid travel if possible; if you must travel, check your vehicle and road conditions. Don't rush.
  • NEVER use a generator or an unvented fuel-burning appliance indoors or in any enclosed space.

If you live on campus:

  • Store extra food and snacks, so you don't have to go out in the cold.
  • Speak with your housing staff if you have concerns.
  • Pay attention to university announcements regarding on-campus services and changes in operational status.
  • Power outages are rare, but can occur. Keep your cellphone fully charged.
  • In the event of significant ice or snowfall, dining services will likely be consolidated into one or two locations. Check the dining website or social media for specific hours of operation.
  • 24-hour Maroon Markets will be available.
  • Contact MSU Police at 662-325-2121 if you have an emergency.

If you work on campus:

  • Monitor local conditions and register for Maroon Alerts.
  • Secure doors and windows before you leave your building.
  • Follow University announcements regarding operations and be prepared to switch to "Remote Operations" if requested to do so. More information: https://www.emergency.msstate.edu/guidelines/op-guidance
